Back pain can be caused by several factors and structures within the back. This can originate from a small strain in the muscles to a large disc bulge with sciatica (nerve irritation). It can sometimes be difficult to pin point the origin or cause of the pain and this in turn may cause further issues due to avoiding certain spinal movements or compensation mechanisms.
What are the causes of Back Pain?
Pain in the lower back is particularly common, although it can be felt anywhere along the spine, from the neck down to the hips. In most cases the pain is not caused by anything serious and will usually settle after a few days. However, it is recommended to get help if:
- the pain does fail to improve
- the pain stops you doing your day-to-day activities
- the pain is severe or spreads into the legs or feet.
- you're worried about the pain or are struggling to cope.
